The programs offered by the Department of Environmental Studies seek to promote understanding of the interactions between environmental, social, and economic issues and policies, the relationship between ethical perspectives and human interactions with the environment, environmental justice, the validity and limitations of scientific theories and claims about the environment, and sustainable development. These goals are achieved through experiential learning partnerships in the classroom and in the surrounding community which are focused on the development of critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills. The purpose of these efforts is to help students and the surrounding community make informed decisions about and innovate with respect to environmental issues at scales ranging from local to global. In doing so, the Environmental Studies program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for careers and graduate studies in a wide range of environmental disciplines, thereby enabling them to capitalize on future opportunities throughout this diverse field, and to be innovative lifelong learners in keeping with the university’s liberal arts tradition. The Environmental Studies faculty contribute to the scientific community through high impact research and pedagogical innovation, and to the advancement of society through service to professional organizations, the university, and the surrounding community.
