HIS 237 Role-Playing and Re-Enacting History
Historians, documentary filmmakers and amateur history buffs have long used acting and performance to represent history—practices which have been subjected to various claims and critiques about authenticity. This course examines these genres of the performance of history and then takes a deep dive into an innovative form of historical simulation through role-playing known as Reacting to the Past. This course asks students to act and react amidst the uncertainties of historical contingency. What if historic figures had made different decisions? Students act out historical moments and think critically about the motivations and situations of real individuals in the past.
