MUS 390 Classroom Management and High Impact Teaching Practices for Music Education

This course prepares preservice music teachers to establish safe, comprehensive, and highly productive music learning environments using evidence-based practices. The course integrates Florida classroom-management requirements with high-impact instructional strategies, including explicit routines and expectations, active supervision, behavior-specific praise, formative assessment, retrieval practice, distributed practice, and well-designed performance tasks. These strategies are applied to music settings such as rehearsal and lesson flow, transitions, instrument care, ensemble and classroom seating, staging, and acoustics across the K-12 music education curriculum. Emphasis is placed on proactive management systems, clear rehearsal structures, and efficient high-leverage teaching moves that support productive rehearsals and improved student learning in K–12 music contexts.
