Department of Environmental Studies

Faculty: Professor Huber, Chair; Associate Professors, Campbell, Froeschke; Assistant Teaching Professor George; Visiting Assistant Professor Glenn.

The B.S. in Environmental Studies, B.A. in Environmental Studies, Minor in Environmental Studies, and Minor in Sustainability seek to promote understanding of the interactions between environmental, social, and economic issues and policies, the relationship between ethical perspectives and human interactions with the environment, equity and environmental justice, the validity and limitations of scientific theories and claims about the environment, and sustainable development, as well as to develop effective analytical and communication skills. These goals are achieved through experiential learning partnerships in the classroom and in the surrounding community which are focused on the development of critical and interdisciplinary thinking skills with the goal of helping students and the surrounding community to innovate on and make responsible decisions about environmental issues at scales ranging from local to global. Through these efforts the department provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for careers and graduate studies in a wide range of environmental disciplines, thereby enabling them to capitalize on future opportunities throughout this diverse field, and to be innovative lifelong learners in keeping with the university’s liberal arts tradition. The Environmental Studies faculty contribute to the scientific community through high impact research and pedagogical innovation, and to the improvement of society through service to professional organizations, the university, and the surrounding community.
